Seminar on handling, packing and transportation of museum objects
Barbro Ilvemo

Abstract

Museums from the Western region were invited to participate in a seminar during two days in October. The seminar presented different aspects of the problems with handling, packing and transportation of museum objects and their solutions. We were given advice on choice of packing materials as well as customs documents needed, the choice of transportation company as well as insurance policies.

An application with comments
Martin Ericson

Abstract

This is a presentation of a newly developed survey called “National Preservation Assessment Survey for Libraries and Archives” which was introduced by National Preservation Office at British Library in 1999. The article reports how the survey was applied to a well known collection of old books at the Old Library in Skara city in Sweden. It is the first time it has been used in Sweden and the experiences of this application will be described here.

Reburial of archaeological objects
Inger Nyström, Thomas Bergstrand

Abstract

Reburial as a method to preserve marine archaeological objects has been used on the westcoast of Sweden. The longtime preserving effects of the method are despite that not fully understood nor are the administrative and jurisdictional implications of its use. To shed some light on these questions two seminars have been held. The aim of the first seminar was to discuss the scientific aspects of the method and to set up a longterm research project at the reburial site in Marstrand. This research project has come to include seven sub-projects which mainly will investigate the preservation of different groups of materials in a reburial environment. Since the seminar the project has been granted funding and will start in the autumn 2002. The second seminar aimed to focus on the administrative and jurisdictional status of a reburial site. The meeting concluded that reburial is a method that could be used if it is done with consideration and also that a reburial site is not an ancient monument or site and therefore not protected by the legislation for the protection of cultural heritage, but a storage room and the owner, eg. the museum is responsible for its keeping.

Storage in adjusted environment
Sara Wranne

Abstract

The project “Storage in adjuted environment” intends to find solutions to storage problems to objects with certain demands to the surrounding environment. These categories are archaeological metals, mostly iron, archaeological amber, silver, mouldy organic objects, weathering mineral and plastic and rubber. The aim is to find storage solutions and methods for the museums. The best solution is climate magazins, adjusted to each category of material. In special cases or for temporary storage, individual packages may be nescessary. They may contain oxygen absorbers, drying medium (silica gel) or volatile corrosion inhibitors. There are no standard solutions; the museum has to weigh the pros and cons of adjusted storage in relation to its own unique collections and objects.

The need of Maintenance Strategy
Lotti Benjaminson

Abstract

In SVK we are involved in many different cases where whole indoor environments are expected to work today, tomorrow and in a future. All kinds of materials have different sorts of claims and are dependent on different matters owing to the kind of goals we work for. Thus a maintenance strategy needs to be constructed. The best way to make this strategy working is to establish a working team, consisting of people with different professions. In most cases the conservator is called only in the end of a project which in my opinion is a wrong way to use our skill. Collaboration with a conservator is often needed through the whole project; there could even be money to be saved.

The problem with floors is that we walk on them
Richard Francén

Abstract

The furniture conservation section at SVK has taken more and more interest in the care of historic floors. Old floors have long been neglected and/or mistreated. Here some causes of decay as well as some traditional treatments are discussed.

Working in public
Ingalill Nyström

Abstract

During the spring 2001 SVK worked in public at The Röhsska museum of Design and Applied Art. The task was to conserve four Buddha sculptures. The project showed that working in public can be a good way of spreading knowledge of conservation and awaken interest for the history of and preservation of museum objects to visitors.

The dawn of countries
Bengt Nordqvist

Abstract

The dawn of countries – reflected through the war-booty site of Finnestorp. The war-booty site of Finnestorp has been investigated during 100 years. In spite of this the knowledge of the site has been poor. The on going project focus on getting basic information concerning the offering site. The result from the last two years investigations has changed our view of Finnestorp. The site is at least 400 m long. In parts of the investigated area there are fantastic conditions of preservation. The finds are from prehistoric warriors (about 1500 years old). What we find are their weapons, their horse-equipment and personal items.

Embriodered silk picture from the late 1800th century
Kerstin Ljungkvist

Abstract

In April 2000 an embroidered picture came to SVK to be conservated. It belonged to the Göteborgs stadsmuseum and had for a time been placed in one of the rooms at the Gunnebo castle. It was made of black silk-yarn on off-white silk material. At the bottom of the picture we can read ”Les Quatre Saisons et La Promenade au Bord de la Belle Vue” embrodered by Helena Christina Kjellbom in 1798. The picture was now in such a poore condition that it was decided it should be given a specially made box as a preventive conservating step. In the box the picture could be stored in the museum magazine and serve as a research object.

Return of a crucifix
Jan Eriksson

Abstract

The supposed to be romananesque crucifdix, from the church of Asige was to be transferred from a local museum back to its place of origin. The crucifix was reconserved at SVK and samples were taken for analyses to cast some light regarding the age of the object. The analyses are not yet finnished.

A study of different mountings for hanging textiles
Anne-Marie Ro

Abstract

As holder of a scholarship at SVK during the summer of 2001 I carried out a study of mounting-methods for textile wall hangings. A test serie of 11 samples was made in a scale of 1:1. The test serie was produced using old, new, good and poor methods as well as experimental ones. The aim of the study was to achieve a reference collection with complementary detailed descriptions. The collection will be used for studies as well as in discussions with customers. The samples will be evaluated in about five years.

… But what is it ... The need for scientific analyses in the sector of cultural heritage management and museums
Inger Nyström

Abstract

A two step investigation was made in order to find out the need for scientific analyses in the sector of cultural heritage management and museums in the West Coast region. The intention of the investigation was to get an understanding if there is a need and wish to intensify the use of analyses in the sector or not. The investigation was conducted through questionnaires and interviews, both within SVK and externally with the regionally based museums and authorities. The result shows a varied picture of how the sector uses scientific analyses, were archaeology and conservation stands for an absolute majority of the analyses. This reflects both the possibilities of financing the analyses but also how multidisciplinary the subject is. Worth noticing is the fact that hardly any analyses are made on objects in archaeology, but rather on the environment, which leaves us with an area of great analytic potential. Since the analyses that the sector uses and wishes to use span over a great spectrum of different scientific analyses there is a need for a consultant link between the humanities and the natural sciences. A person or persons who could be a guide through the djungle of various analytic alternative that are put forward would be of great value. Likewise is the creation of regional databases where different analytic results would be compiled of great importance.

New measuring instruments for climate control
Eva Ernfridsson

Abstract

SVK has obtained two new measuring intruments for climate control, an Easylog 24RFT for measuring relative humidity and temperature and a Novasina ms1 aw for measuring wateractivity and temperature. Easylog 24RFT is suitable for long term use and can store 2x24000 measurements at intervals progammed to be between 2 seconds and 5 hours. Time and date is recorded for each measurement. The measuring range is between 0– 100 % for relative humidity and –25–60ºC for temperature. Data is later easily worked up in an ordinary PC in the form of tables or graphs. Easylog 24RFT is small, 5 x 5 cm, and can be placed almost everywhere. Novasina ms1 aw is held by hand while measuring and has a measuring range between 0.05–0.95 aw for wateractivity and –10–50ºC for temperature. The sensor is placed against the material that is to be measured and the instrument stores the measurements. The recorded data is later worked up by connecting Novasina ms1 aw to an ordinary PC.
