The Marstrand Project
Andreas Olsson

Abstract

At the island of Marstrand, westcoast archipelago of Sweden, a large under water archaeological project managed by Bohus County Museum has been undertaken. The project is a result of extensive construction works in the harbour.

The foundation of Marstrand town was established during the 13th century. Due to the intimate and strategic connection between the town, the archipelago and the sea, the town has been a vital centre for fishing, communication, trade and warfare in the North Sea and southern parts of the Baltic Sea. This makes Marstrand one of the most interesting under water archaeological sites of the western part of Sweden with extensive cultural layers containing finds and remains of ships dating from medieval times.

The largest single investigation of the Marstrand project is the excavation of the Swedish Frigate Fredricus, scuttled by the Swedish themselves in 1719 as the city and the citadel of Carlsten was under siege by a Danish squadron. The article gives an introduction to the project and relates to the under water archaeological situation in the county of Västra Götaland and to Sweden as a whole.

Fredricus and the Field of Maritime History
Olof Pipping

Abstract

The wreck of the FREDRICUS, deliberately sunk in 1719, surprisingly yielded quite a lot of well preserved rigging material, including fragments of cordage and sailcloth. Modern practices of marine archaeology and conservation ensures that the artefacts will be a rich source of comparative information for maritime historians.

Bastardsvärdet i Säveån
The Hybrid Sword in Säveån

Eva Edsler

Abstract

The studio received in 1996 a sword from Gothenburg City Museum, the intentions were to put it on display in their medieval exhibition. The question was, was it really a medieval sword or was it later in time. The sword was corroded and the double-edged blade broken but in general good condition with some very nice inlaings on the pommel. The type of sword is well known but not the look of the hilt. It was broken up and straightened out but still it didn´t look like any known type of hilt.

It is probably a Swedish version of the German soldier sword from the 16th century, where the same typ of sword was used but the design a lot ruffer than the origin. The conclusion was that the sword was younger than what had been assumed before, problably belonging to the Renaissance.

Why does it come that Chinchorros has Became Part of the Western Sweden Cultural Heritage?
Monica Gustafsson

Abstract

Erika Johansson

Abstract

The article deals with the different ways of researching and documenting paintlayers in historical buildings in order to get a better understanding of painting techniques, traditions and materials as well as knowing how a building looked at a certain time. The author calls for the need of bringing in the conservator at an early stage of a project. She also asks for methods of documentation that can be available to future research and how this information can be transformed into optical correct reconstructions.

Stipendieprojekt 1998 – En referenssamling av ”gjutna” pappersprover
Mattias Nittérus

Abstract

During a four week scholarship at the Dept. of Paper Conservation, a collection of various reference samples has been fabricated. The purpose of this reference collection is to facilitate work with the ”leaf casting machine”, in that it offers a possibility to quick and accurate determinition of necessary fiber blend to each specific object. The need for such accurate blendings are obvious to those with experience from work with the leaf casting equipment. A raw material consisting of 100% pure cellulose, in 12 different colours has been used.

The coulourblendings of this material have been made on a systematic basis, mainly adapting to the concept of ”tint triangles”. By placing the pure and unblended colours in the apices of a triangle and in the sides and center the mixture between two or three components, a useful and comprehensive colourchart is thus achieved. The reference samples are each consisting of approx. 1g dry fiber, which has been mixed with water, moulded on a special felt, sized and dried. The samples were split in half, one section put in the tint triangles and one gathered in a card index for use as a comparative material.

What about fungi – A Find of Fungi Imperfecti at Nordvära in Halland, South-Western Sweden
Inger Nyström/Tore Artelius

Abstract

During excavation of a bronze-age burial in Värö, Halland, Sweden, an interesting and challenging archaeological find of fungi hyphae fragments was found. The aim of the poster is to present these fragments, at first looking like waste material from leather production. No final conclusions can or will be drawn at this point, instead the purpose is to raise questions about (a) the material itself, e.g. its nature and use, whether it is man-made, made by nature and used by man, (b) to what extent it is known from other archaeological contexts.

The poster will stress the importance of thorough material analysis before labeling and recording a find and reflect on the human way of perception, ”what we see is what we know”, and whether this could imply the exsistence of other similar finds recorded as leather or felted wool. Finally it will present a solution for storage and preservation which makes further research possible.
